What is a Priestess?

A priestess is a woman who embodies the timeless archetype of divine feminine wisdom and power and has trained in a particular lineage (or lineages) that remembers a path rooted in the Sacred Feminine. She is a guardian of the sacred, a Healer, a Guide, and a bridge between the material and the spiritual. She is often an Oracle, a space holder, a sacred Celebrant, and a Ceremonialist. She bridges and walks between the seen and unseen realms and therefore may also be a Midwife to those coming into the world and those leaving it. Her role is to remind us of the mystical essence that permeates our world and to help us reconnect with the divine. She is also here to help us step into our fullest, most authentic expression.

The history of the priestess extends far back, from the ancient temples of Sumer (Mesopotamia), Babylonian, Egypt, and Greece to the lands of the Celtic Druids. Some say even further back to the Neolithic periods when “God” was considered to be the Divine Feminine force, who both created and took life.

While over the past thousands of years, this role was denigrated, crushed, and in many ways destroyed, her influence persists even in the modern world, where more women are reconnecting with their innate wisdom and choosing to follow the path of the priestess.

A Priestess is a Guardian of the Sacred

A Priestess is a guardian of the sacred, a keeper of ancient wisdom, and a channel for divine energies. She stands at the threshold between the material and the spiritual, bridging the gap between the earthly realm, the heavens above, and the Otherworld, and in many cases, the Underworld.

Her role is not confined to any specific religious tradition; rather, it transcends the boundaries of dogma and doctrine. She is a universal symbol of sacred feminine wisdom and power, transcending time and culture.

A Priestess is Highly Intuitive

At the heart of the priestess archetype lies a deep and mystical connection to the unseen forces that shape our world. She is attuned to the rhythms of nature, the cycles of the moon, and the whispers of the wind. Her intuition is finely tuned, allowing her to perceive the subtle energies that flow through all things. She dances with the stars and communions with the spirits of the land, for she knows that the mystical is woven into the fabric of reality.

A Priestess is a Healer and Guide

A priestess is often a Healer and Guide, offering solace and wisdom to those who seek her counsel. With her gentle touch and compassionate heart, she soothes the wounded soul and offers guidance to those in need. She is a beacon of light in times of darkness, a source of hope and inspiration for those who have lost their way.

A Priestess is a Space Holder & Ceremonialist

One of the defining features of a priestess is her role in ritual and ceremony. She conducts sacred rites, rituals, and ceremonies, invoking the energies of the divine to bring blessings, healing, threshold crossing (such as life and death), and transformation. Her rituals are a dance of symbolism and intention, a weaving of the mundane and the miraculous. Through her ceremonies, she helps individuals and communities reconnect with the sacred and find meaning in the mysteries of life.

A Priestess Leads with the Sacred Feminine

A Priestess serves the sacred feminine - a powerful source of nurturing, creativity, and change. She represents the power of receptivity, intuition, and emotional depth. In a world often dominated by masculine energy, the Priestess serves as a reminder of the importance of balance and harmony between the masculine and feminine aspects of existence.

As we embrace the archetypal Priestess within ourselves, we tap into a wellspring of ancient wisdom.
